Special Announcement

Ray Bolo, one of our members, was recently inducted into the Michigan Golf Hall of Fame. Ray was the head professional at Western Golf and Country Club in the Detroit area for 37 years, teaching the game, building it through junior golf and making time to play at a high level. Ray is a four-time Michigan PGA Seniors Champion, scored an international senior professional division win in Scotland’s Internatinal Four Ball Tournament in 1983, and was also part of a winning pro-am team in the celebrated AT&T Pebble Beach National Pro-Am in 1983. Congratulations, Ray!

Possible Tournament Change

I am considering adding an additional gross score only flight to the tournaments. This would take place only after discussion and approval of the membership.

As you may know, we are the only senior group which awards two low gross prizes in the first flight. I did this a few years ago (with membership endorsement) to accommodate our more accomplished players who are used to playing in “scratch” tournaments and to give them an opportunity to win more often. We have added more players with single digit handicaps. For example, at Furman we had over 20 single digit players who made up the entire first flight. We have 31 single digit handicap members and an additional 7 who have a handicap in the 9.6 to 9.9 range (which are rounded up to 10). This “tournament within a tournament” would be played off the men’s (white) tees with course yardage in the 6200 – 6500 range.

If this change were to take place, the gross score or “scratch” flight would be filled on a voluntary basis and the prizes for this flight would not be funded from the players in the other flights. In other words, there would be no reduction in the prize pot for the other flights. Prizes for the “scratch” flight would come from the members playing in that flight and may be supplemented by a separate funding source. No FSGA monies would be used to pay prizes in this flight.

Again, this change is only under consideration and if approved by the membership would be implemented after approval. I am soliciting feedback. If you would prefer to talk to me rather than email me, please call my office phone at 278-8275. Your call will automatically roll over to my cell phone if I am not in the office.
